Since September 2010, filling in the ESTA form has become a requirement for travel to the USA. By using the Internet, you can make an online application, which is much easier than the usual visa applications. The ESTA formality is for nationals of countries where the Visa Waiver Program applies. The formality is affixed for travelers to the U.S. by air or sea.

HOW TO COMPLETE ESTA QUESTIONNAIRES

To complete the questionnaires, simply go to the ESTA website and fill in the form in English once the page is open. Your identification is required to fill in the form. Answering the ESTA questions correctly will facilitate approval of the form. The procedures are the same as on the old I-94W form (green form for travelers under the Visa Waiver Program).

ESTA IS JUST A FORM

ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is a necessary form for travelers to the United States, but it does not replace a visa. Nor will it guarantee you passage through the border when you arrive on American soil. This form authorizes you to travel to the United States without a visa for two years, but cannot be used if your passport has expired.

THE RIGHT TIME TO APPLY

Following a recommendation from the DHS (Department of Homeland Security), it is advisable to request a form at least 72 hours before departure. The main reason for this recommendation is that your authorization request may be put on hold for further examination by the authorities. In this case, they guarantee a response within 3 days. However, you don’t have to plan ahead, but you do so at your own risk.
